Lesa Calogna: The small hamlet of Lesa known as Calogna (about 70 inhabitants) is set on the eastern slopes of Motta Rossa, a high hill above the level tract of the River Erno. It is located above Belgirate, at an altitude of 522 metres. The area above Calogna is an incomparable repository of nature, bubbling with waters, and abounding with chestnut, holly, pine, fir and above all silver birch trees. This, and the aerial views, makes it one of the most beautiful corners of the Vergante in landscape terms, and a destination worth pointing out to respectful tourists. The construction of large golf courses in the woods around the summit brought about great changes in the 1980s. The area above it is known as `Castel-là’ (a), an urban area where the only point of access for vehicles is through an ancient gateway and the houses are set one upon the other along three narrow, parallel strips of land, like the terraces in the nearby vineyards. They all appear to be protected by a wall below, running along the street, almost in the manner of a castle. Perhaps it owes its name to this very structure and the decentralised position in which it is set in relation to the heart of Calogna: là’, meaning `shifted’ in Italian.
